China Releases Mandatory National RoHS Standard; Connector Industry Faces Major Environmental Compliance Challenge

On August 1, 2025, the mandatory national standard GB 26572-2025, “Requirements for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products,” was officially released, marking the transition of China’s RoHS regulations from voluntary compliance to mandatory compliance. The standard will be fully implemented on August 1, 2027, expanding the scope of regulated hazardous substances from the original six categories to ten, with four new phthalate compounds added.

For the connector and cable industry, the new regulations present comprehensive challenges. Metal materials must meet lead-free requirements, and the use of toxic and hazardous substances such as mercury and hexavalent chromium is prohibited; plating on metal surfaces is also subject to strict restrictions. Plastic materials must comply with halogen-free requirements, and the use of plasticizers such as bisphenol A and phthalates is prohibited. This means that connector manufacturers need to reassess their supply chains, identify compliant alternative materials, and improve their production processes.

Industry insiders point out that the implementation of this standard aims to align with international RoHS regulations and promote the reduction and substitution of toxic and hazardous substances within the industry. With approximately one year remaining until full implementation, companies must complete compliance upgrades by August 1, 2027. This represents not only environmental pressure but also a significant opportunity for companies to enhance their green competitiveness.
